Separation and divorce bring big financial questions: What will you pay or receive each month, and how do courts decide? Alimonify gives you clear, step-by-step calculations based directly on official state guidelines—free from paywalls, forms, or hidden fees.

01 / Why We Built This

Clear Answers for Families in Transition

Planning your household budget during a separation or divorce shouldn't require guesswork or an expensive lawyer just to run basic math. Too many online calculators hide answers behind paywalls, sell your contact information to law firms, or refuse to show how they got the numbers.

Alimonify puts real answers directly into your hands. Every calculation runs right in your browser, showing you the exact formulas, state tables, and parenting-time rules that family courts use.

02 / The Difference

Alimony vs. Child Support: How They Work

People often use "alimony" to mean any post-divorce payment. But under the law, Child Support and Alimony (Spousal Support) are handled very differently:

Child Support (Formula-Based)

Every state has a legal formula to calculate child support. Judges almost always follow this formula unless there are exceptional circumstances. The calculation is based on each parent's income, parenting time (overnights), health insurance, and childcare costs.

Alimony / Spousal Support (Discretionary)

Alimony is designed to help a spouse transition financially after marriage. It weighs factors like length of the marriage, income differences, and each spouse's needs. Unlike child support, most states do not have one mandatory formula—judges have wider discretion.

How they work together: Alimony payments directly affect child support. In most states, alimony paid is subtracted from the paying parent's income and added to the receiving parent's income before calculating child support.
03 / The Key Factors

What Determines Your Support Payment?

Whether you are negotiating, working with a mediator, or consulting a lawyer, these core factors shape the legal calculation:

1. Parent IncomesBoth parents' earnings, wages, bonuses, and business income. Some states use gross income, while others subtract taxes first.
2. Parenting Time & OvernightsHow many nights children spend with each parent. Shared physical custody often reduces the monthly payment.
3. Healthcare & Daycare CostsOut-of-pocket costs for child health insurance and work-related daycare are usually shared in proportion to each parent's income.
4. Low-Income ProtectionsState guidelines include a self-support reserve so low-income parents can still cover their own basic living expenses.
